The data base has two princial functions.
1. It can be used as a wiki-field guide to the birds of Peru oline, since there is space on the page for each species to ulpload photos and recordings as well as also text regarding morphological details, identification, habitat and habits, etc. All members signed u to the database can help in filling in this data. It shall work as a wiki medium.
2. As a data base for records in general of Peruvian birds. This is the main feature which both will enable the birders to keep score of his/her life list and be able to compare it with others. It is all the part of that will be of invaluable use to the the researchers to monitor population trends, distribution, breeding data, etc
Inserting records to the database.
You may insert only the record of one sighting and you can do so by inserting t he data of the sighting on the page for each species. The easiest way to insert a big number of records is to make a trip report on the web page.
1. Trip-report maker.
First Sign up (little text on upper right) on

Then wait for approval from ADMIN.... you may want to send an e-mail directly to ADMIN at kolibriexp@gmail.com to inform that you are waiting for the approval, since the automatic confirmation e-mail comes to a different e-mail account.
If you already have an account, but have forgotten your password, click on the corresponding link and your passport will be sent to you.
When you are approved you can start inserting your records. Click on "My trip reports section"
Best to insert the records in the "My trip reports section" and make a new trip report.
After filling in the Name of the report (mention all the birding areas and the dates and year in the title so it is easy to find), co-participants and some highlights, there will be two ways of inserting the records in the "Species List" section.
By birding site chronologically - this is if you want to write down the observation as it appears in your note-book.
or
Systematically....which more or less simulates your daily checklist the way you have filled it in each night. Doing it this way you need to specify all the sites you visited before you start inserting the records, then you choose the dates you visited each site and finally you select the species.
There are several reasons why it is better to insert the data chronologically.
• it is easier as each site will mention only the species recorded previously from that site...therefore it is a fast way of doing it.
• it is of more statistical value since it gives the observation time at the site. Presently on the systematic version there is no possibility to insert how long time you were at a site, but this may well change in the near future.
2. Insert a sighting on the species page for each species.
You can insert individual records on the species page for each species and this is a good way if you are only inserting a handful of records. However, for many records with 100-200 species today you are better off using the trip report function.
3. Photos
Photographs inserted on the pics page of www.birdingperu.com will automatically also become records. So if you are a member of the data base these records will also be accounted for in your total list, as well as show on the individual species page.
Frequent Questions.
1. Co-particpants.
I was co-participant on a trip which already occurs in trip-reports. How do I get the birds also accounted for on my life list?
It is enough if one of the party of observers uploads the records. The trip report maker just needs to mention the co-observers and better still provide their e-mails. Co-observers can credit their observations by clicking on "My Sightings/Tripreports" and then "join to others trip reports" (strange English by the web-master - have to change this!!). It is also possible to insert a click at “not seen by me” for each species missed, as well as adding species not mentioned by the trip report maker.
Explanation of the individual species pages.
