2019 is just around the corner. You’re probably planning on how to start the year right for your community. In the gazillion things that a large group of people can do, it’s pretty hard to write about all of them in one sitting. So in this post, we’re going to focus on one energetic segment of the society – the youth.
These young people with young minds have so much energy and time, and it’s always a great idea to get them involved in community activities. We know that it’s easier said than done. Not all teenagers are the same and we know that they have diverse interests. It will be difficult to pool them all in one place to do a single activity that will interest them.
That’s why today, were going to share several activities that will attract this diverse group of people and get them to do something meaningful and productive. We’re going to skip regular activities like sports and singing contests because communities are replete with these kinds of events. We’re going to focus on more creative ones. Read on to find out!
Month-Long Group Tournament
Nothing teases the attention of a young person better than a competition. Again, we’re not talking about a sports tournament here. The month-long group tournaments that we’re talking about include Minute-to-Win-It contests, cook-offs, and other fun youth games that can take place at least once a week.
Hold it on all four weekends and declare the winning group at the end of the month. This kind of activities will instill the spirit of teamwork and involvement in the hearts of the young members of your community. It could be a series of competitions with only one theme or it could be a different theme per weekend. The more diverse, the better!
Home Decorating Contest
Find it hard to get your teenagers to clean and organize the house? Well, start a home decorating contest in the community with an attractive cash prize and see if they won’t race against each other to reach your home cleaning materials and decorations.
In the advent of Tasty, MasterChef US, and thousands of downloadable cooking game apps, a food bazaar will surely be a hit especially for the youth! If their moms won’t allow them to cook inside the house, it’s their time to shine in the community kitchen by showcasing their dishes in a food bazaar. This activity could be a fundraising event or simply a youth activity that the whole community would love.
Viral Community Video Challenge
Instead of filling up the storage of their gadgets with narcissistic selfies, they can use these gifts of technology to win a community contest for the most viral video. Let them use their creative minds and network of friends in good use. Select relevant community issues such as environmental protection, poverty elimination, anti-cyberbullying, and the like as the theme of the video challenge to get them involved in issues that really matter.
As teenagers, these young people find it hard to follow what they’re not interested in. But if you use their interest for something that is productive and meaningful, then it will be a win-win
